National Day of Prayer Today!

Post by xotrevor »

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)

The National Day of Prayer in America is an annual observance that takes place on the first Thursday in May that was designated by the United States Congress, when people are asked "to turn to God in prayer and meditation". This day is dedicated to praying for the nation and its leaders, and it is an opportunity for people of faith to come together and seek divine guidance and support. The President of the United States of America as a republic and as a sovereign nation is required by law (36 U.S.C. § 119) to sign a proclamation each year, encouraging all Americans to pray on this day.

The National Day of Prayer has a long and rich history in America. The first recorded prayer gathering in America dates back to 1775, when the Continental Congress set aside a day for prayer in response to the ongoing war with Great Britain. Since then, there have been numerous days of prayer observed throughout American history. The modern law formalizing its annual observance was enacted in 1952, although earlier days of fasting and prayer had been established by the Second Continental Congress from 1775 until 1783, and by President John Adams in 1798 and 1799. Thomas Jefferson established a day of prayer and thanksgiving, but this occurred while he served as governor of Virginia.

Today, the National Day of Prayer is observed by millions of Americans of faith, and it is a time for individuals, families, and communities to come together and lift up the nation in prayer. The day typically includes prayer gatherings, worship services, and other events that are designed to bring people together in a spirit of unity and fellowship. The National Day of Prayer is an important day for many Americans because it provides an opportunity to reflect on the nation's history and the challenges that it faces today. It is also a time to pray for the nation's leaders and to seek guidance and wisdom as they make decisions that will impact the future of the country.

One of the key themes of the National Day of Prayer is unity. The day is designed to bring people of faith together in a spirit of harmony and cooperation. This is particularly important in a country as diverse as America, where people come from many different backgrounds and cultural traditions. Another important theme of the National Day of Prayer is gratitude. Americans are encouraged to take time on this day to give thanks for the blessings that they have received and to acknowledge the role that faith has played in their lives. This can include expressing gratitude for family and friends, for good health, and for the many freedoms and opportunities that are available in America.

The National Day of Prayer is also an opportunity to pray for specific needs and concerns facing the nation. These may include issues such as social justice, economic inequality, and national security. By coming together in prayer, Americans can express their concerns and seek guidance and support as they work to address these important issues.

The constitutionality of the National Day of Prayer was unsuccessfully challenged in court by the Freedom From Religion Foundation after their attempt was unanimously dismissed by a panel of a federal judges in April 2011.

God Bless America!
