The original U.S. Constitution was entitled “Constitution OF the United States”, not Constitution FOR the United States. My Constitution book has a 1787 printing of the Constitution, which is plainly titled “Constitution OF the United States”.

The Preamble

We the People OF the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

The Preamble

We the People FOR the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States.

This is the EXACT wording also found in my 1787 edition, including “for” the United States of America in the preamble.



You will see that the above preamble, which is today’s version, is the same in all respects as that in the original Constitution.
